Ebook About
Rebekah and Patrick, burned-out newspaper journalists from the USA and England, were captured by the generous spirit they found the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. They sold up their American lives and moved to Spain in 2006, to a town of twenty farmers inthe middle of the 500-mile, thousand-year-old pilgrim road. They did their best to catch the ancient rhythms of seedtime, harvest, pig-stickings and saints’ days. The year 2010 was a Holy Year, when more than 300,000 pilgrims walked to the shrine city of Santiago de Compostela. Some stayed at Peaceable Kingdom, the farmhouse where the couple offered a night’s food and lodging in exchange for whatever the pilgrim wanted to give. They were nuns, bums, Oxford dons, mystics, fugitives, hippies, and lunatics, as well as greyhounds, barn cats, roosters, and donkeys. Most moved on after a day or two, but some came to stay.“A Furnace full of God” is their story.

Book A Furnace Full of God: A Holy Year on the Camino de Santiago Review :

The author weave a masterful tale of her life with her husband after moving to Spain and buying a house on the Camino de Santiago in Moratinos. I am a frequent pilgrim on the Camino and have stayed with Rebekah and Paddy many times. I spent a month with Paddy and the menagerie several years ago while Reb was visiting the USA, I can attest to daily rigors of life in Meseta and I still call it heaven.
Who among us has not fantasized about a simpler life or a life with greater purpose? Rebekah Scott and her husband, Patrick, set about to chase that dream. They leave behind the rigors and deadlines of their journalist careers and settle into a small, somewhat forgotten village along the route of the famed Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in northern Spain. There they transform a modest, dilapidated farmhouse into a travelers’ respite. Not an inn, per se, but a resting place for pilgrims making the spiritual journey of the Camino. This memoir of their first several years there provides a snapshot into their lives as hospitaleros, welcoming into their home a diverse array of pilgrims, some with fascinating backstories, each on a personal quest. But the real journey that is described here is not the physical path of the Camino, but Rebekah’s personal odyssey as she seeks spiritual meaning in her everyday life in the village -- hosting pilgrims, communing with her neighbors, tending to her beloved dogs, and grappling with a local culture that she finds both fascinating and sometimes confounding. Through these acts, as well as via her own pilgrimages along the Camino, she finds fuel for the spiritual furnace that burns within her. This is a short, elegantly-written book. It may or may not make you want to make the pilgrimage, but it WILL make you want to pull up a chair at the table in Rebekah’s and Patrick’s hostel to hear more about their lives and those of their pilgrim guests.
