Ebook About The Anasazi of Chaco Canyon by Kyle Widner. Perhaps the most fascinating chapter in Southwest history is the tale of the mysterious, “vanished” Anasazi Indians. Their tremendous achievements can be found in many places, including the spectacular cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park. But the crest of the Anasazi wave was in Chaco Canyon, a shallow, windswept wash in northwest New Mexico. Here in Chaco Canyon, 1,000 years ago, strange and unexplained events unfolded; events which continue to intrigue scientists, visitors, and those interested in the Anasazi.During the years 850-1150 AD, the Anasazi built multi-story buildings comparable in size to the Roman Coliseum in Chaco Canyon. Advanced astronomy, water works, and agriculture flourished. Exotic artifacts from Central America were traded over routes spanning thousands of miles. And after 300 years, the Anasazi carefully sealed everything up, left Chaco Canyon, and never returned. The Anasazi of Chaco Canyon offers insight into the unknowns of the “Chaco Phenomenon”. In addition, it draws on the latest Anasazi research, personal experiences, and interpretations of oral traditions, leading the reader to a startling conclusion. What happened in Chaco Canyon? Why did the Anasazi choose this foreboding location to construct spectacular Great Houses?Influenced by the writings of Edward Abbey and James Michener, Kyle Widner is a desert wanderer, amateur Anasazi ruins hunter, and Chaco Canyon aficionado. He lives in Boulder City, Nevada with his wife Jean, two golden retrievers, and two cats. This book is the companion guide to an educational video game and 3D computer simulation of Chaco Canyon for Mac and PC computers. On first try at reading I gave up less than halfway through, because of the very poor editing and my questioning of the intent of the author. I gave the book an overly generous rating.Bored and looking for something in my library to read a few years after the initial attempt, I noticed that i had previously suspended reading it. I decided to read the reviews, many of which were glowing, and decided to give it another try. After plowing through even more abysmally poor editing, and concluding that the author had never decided whether to write a factual survey of scientific study of Chacoan history and culture, or to pen a fictional short story set in Chaco Canyon, I concluded that I had been correct in giving up at my first attempt. While I found this book a worthwhile read with a comprehensive set of reference, it is written in more simple style and the author is more of a hobbyist than a professional. He concludes the book with his speculation on why the Chaco folks first settled there and why they later vacated the site. Although his speculation may be correct, I did not find it entirely convincing. If you decide to learn more about Chaco Canyon and those that live there, this might not be the best first book to read. I suspect others may like the author's style and presentation approach more than I did. In the end, I still think it is worth 4 stars.
